Special Education

The primary goal of the Scott County School District Department of Student Services is to provide a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) to students with disabilities, ages 3-21. In order to meet the unique educational needs of each disabled student, the Scott County School District makes available a continuum of placement and programming options. To qualify for special education services the student must meet the eligibility criteria specified in the Mississippi Department of Education’s State Policies Regarding Children with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 (State Board Policy 7219), and additionally, the student must require specially-designed instruction and/or related services. Disability categories include:

Child Find

The Scott County School District participates in an ongoing statewide effort to identify, locate, and evaluate children (birth – 21) who have a physical, mental, communicative, and/or emotional disability. Early identification and support to children in need of special education services is important in maximizing each child’s potential; therefore, it is the goal of this campaign to identify, locate, and evaluate all children suspected of having a disability who reside in the Scott County School District. This includes Children in day care, Highly mobile children (such as migrant and homeless children), Wards of the State, Private school children, Children advancing from grade to grade, and those children who are suspected of having a disability and who are in need of special education services. The Scott County School District Child Find activities continue throughout the year, including holidays, spring break, and during summer months, with referrals not limited by the time of year nor by the number of requests received per year. For more information, read the Child Find brochure (here) or contact Director Ginger Cockrell at (601) 469-3873, ext 213 (or by email).
